Dental teams will benefit from an understanding of the oral health challenges faced by this patient population, as well as strategies for successful management.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify the clinical manifestations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how it is diagnosed.
  2. Discuss the literature describing the association between ASD and dental caries.
  3. Describe treatment strategies to improve the oral health of patients with ASD.

Ann M. Bruhn, RDH, BSDH, MS, is an associate professor and chair of the Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene at ODU. She is a frequent contributor to peer-reviewed journals, a coauthor of Exercises In Oral Radiography Techniques: A Laboratory Manual, and has written several textbook chapters.
