EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the prevalence, risks, and signs of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), as well as oral health considerations for affected patients.
  2. Discuss the connection between periodontal infection and the brain infection seen in patients with AD.
  3. Explain the lost and retained abilities related to brain changes among individuals with AD.

Emily R. Holt, MHA, RDH, CDA, EFDA, is a clinical professor of dental hygiene at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. In 2020, she became a certified Positive Approach to Care independent trainer and educates dental professionals about dementia and behavioral approaches. Holt, who practices dental hygiene part time in Evansville, is also a consultant member of the examination team for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments, the Western Regional Examining Board and Council of Interstate Testing Agencies.
