EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify oral diseases commonly found in those with Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
  2. Discuss oral hygiene strategies for individuals with AD.
  3. Implement appropriate modifications to support successful dental appointments for this patient population.

Emily R. Holt, MHA, RDH, CDA, EFDA, is a clinical professor of dental hygiene at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. In 2020, she became a certified Positive Approach to Care independent trainer and educates dental professionals about dementia and behavioral approaches. Holt, who practices dental hygiene part time in Evansville, is also a consultant member of the examination team for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments, the Western Regional Examining Board and Council of Interstate Testing Agencies.
