For the first time in 30 years, an American Dental Association (ADA) member will serve as president-elect of the Fédération dentaire international, now officially known as the FDI World Dental Federation. Kathryn A. Kell, DDS, a general practitioner from Davenport, Iowa, was elected in late September at the FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Bangkok. Representing the voice of more than 1 million dentists, the FDI World Dental Federation comprises approximately 200 national dental associations from more than 130 countries. As FDI president-elect, Kell plans to focus on shaping leadership capacity at all levels and increasing the value of membership by enhancing FDI programming. She has practiced for more than four decades, and served in leadership roles with the FDI for 17 years, most recently as treasurer. Kell was an ADA trustee from 2004 to 2008, and previously served as president of the Iowa Dental Association.
