When Titanium Triggers Inflammation

Researchers have uncovered how titanium particles may keep immune cells in an inflammatory loop that destroys bone and identified a potential target for future treatments.

While implant therapy has a strong success rate, the longer the implants are functioning, the higher the risk of peri-implantitis.1 And unless the infection is stopped in the early stages, implant failure is a possibility. So why is peri-implantitis so hard to manage?

One reason is that antibiotics are rarely successful at clearing the infection. A recent study by researchers at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine looked at why antibiotics are not more effective. The results may surprise you. They found that the implants themselves emit tiny titanium particles when faced with a bacterial challenge. These particles set off an immune response but the white blood cells are unable to clear the metal so the white blood cells just continue in a hyperinflammatory state. The inflammation eventually erodes the bone.

The study, which was conducted on mice, determined that a particular calcium channel within the white blood cells was awakened by the titanium particles. Once this channel was closed, the inflammatory pathway was shut down.

This discovery may, ultimately, lead to the development of medications that can turn off this hyperinflammatory trigger, enabling implants to remain healthy throughout their lifespan. Click here to read more.
