Utah Opens Hospital Doors to Dental Hygienists
Utah has passed new legislation expanding where dental hygienists can practice, officially adding hospitals to the state’s definition of public health settings. The move is expected to broaden access to preventive oral healthcare while strengthening collaboration between dental and medical teams.
Dental hygienists in Utah are gaining new clinical territory following the passage of Utah House Bill 414, a measure that expands the state’s definition of public health settings to include hospitals. Once enacted, the law will allow licensed dental hygienists to provide care within hospital environments, marking a notable shift in how preventive oral healthcare can be delivered across the state.
Previously, Utah law allowed dental hygienists to practice in settings such as schools, long-term care facilities, public health agencies, community clinics, and federally qualified health centers. By adding hospitals to that list, lawmakers have created new opportunities for dental hygienists to reach medically complex patients and individuals who may face barriers to traditional dental care.
The legislation also reflects a broader trend toward integrating oral health into overall healthcare delivery. Hospital-based practice could enable dental hygienists to collaborate more closely with physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals, particularly when treating patients with chronic disease, limited mobility, or extended hospital stays.
Advocacy efforts by the Utah Dental Hygienists’ Association played a central role in advancing the bill through the legislature.
