Delivering Smiles in Honduras: W&H Partners with Dr. Nekky Jamal in a Collaborative Dental Brigade in Underserved Communities

WINDSOR, ONTARIO, Aug 6, 2025: In January, Change for Children organized a dental brigade to Honduras, composed of 18 Canadian volunteers—including dental professionals and laypersons—dedicated to global health outreach. The team delivered oral health services and education in four underserved communities along the Caribbean coast. This initiative reflects the power of collaborative efforts to reduce disparities in dental care, while fostering cross-cultural exchange and professional solidarity.

Clinical Services and Equipment in the Field

Under the leadership of Dr. Nekky Jamal, the team traveled with essential portable equipment to provide surgical extractions, restorative procedures, and preventive hygiene care. Instrumentation included basic dental kits, portable dental units, and for the first time, the W&H Implanted surgical motor and handpieces.

W&H’s Brian Schiefer joined the team, and both his technical support and the provided equipment proved indispensable. The Implantmed motor notably increased the efficiency of surgical extractions, especially in cases involving dense bone, allowing clinicians to treat more patients effectively in a time-limited setting. This improved workflow meant more pain was alleviated, and more smiles were restored each day.

Brian’s expertise was also instrumental in ensuring continuous operation of the dental units, generators, and motor—critical to sustaining care in open-air, makeshift clinic environments where high temperatures and humidity posed logistical challenges. Equipment failure was simply not an option with overwhelming patient loads and limited working hours.

Impact and Outreach

Over the course of the mission, more than 400 patients received free dental care. In these remote communities, where access to oral healthcare is scarce and resources are limited, families—adults and children alike—lined up, placing their trust in the visiting team. The need was great, and the response from the volunteers was even greater.

This type of care not only addresses urgent dental issues but also helps to build relationships, raise awareness of oral health, and inspire hope in communities where dental needs often go unmet.
