WHO Raises Concerns About Equity in COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu, PhD—director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO)—criticized vaccine manufacturers for putting profits above ethics when it comes to equitably distributing COVID-19 immunizations. In an executive board meeting on January 18, Adhanom Ghebreyesu complained that healthy, younger people in wealthy nations were receiving COVID-19 vaccinations while older people and frontline healthcare workers in poor countries had little to no access to the immunizations. According to the WHO, Guinea—a sub-Saharan African nation in which more than 60% of its residents live below the global poverty line—received only 25 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine while high-income nations have received millions.
