Resolution Defends Fluoridation as Florida Ban Sparks National Debate

A new congressional resolution urges states to maintain scientifically recommended fluoride levels in public drinking water following Florida’s ban on water fluoridation. Dental and public health organizations say the measure reinforces decades of evidence supporting fluoridation as a cornerstone of disease prevention.

A congressional resolution introduced by Lois Frankel is drawing attention across the dental community as lawmakers and health organizations push back against Florida’s recent prohibition on adding fluoride to public water systems. The measure affirms the importance of maintaining scientifically recommended fluoride levels in community drinking water and urges states to continue the long-standing public health practice.

Florida became one of only two states last year to prohibit water fluoridation, raising concerns among oral health professionals that the policy could reverse decades of progress in preventing tooth decay. Support for the resolution has come from a broad coalition of dental and public health organizations, including the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research, and American Association of Public Health Dentistry.

Community water fluoridation has long been recognized as one of the most effective population-based strategies for reducing dental caries. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified fluoridation as one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century, with studies showing it can reduce tooth decay by roughly 25%. Frankel’s resolution recognizes fluoridation as a safe and cost-effective public health intervention, encourages states and local communities to maintain recommended fluoride levels, and supports continued research, education, and investment in fluoridation programs aimed at improving oral health nationwide.
