Ferris State to Launch Michigan’s First Dental Therapy Program
Ferris State University is developing Michigan’s first dental therapy education program to expand access to care in underserved communities. The move follows the state’s licensing of its first dental therapist, now practicing in the Upper Peninsula.
Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan is developing a new dental therapy program aimed at improving access to oral healthcare across Michigan. The initiative comes as Michigan recently licensed its first dental therapist, marking a major milestone for the state. Developed in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the program will be the first of its kind in Michigan. Dental therapists provide basic services such as exams, cleanings, and restorative care, often in community-based settings like schools and health centers. With more than 1.5 million residents living in dental shortage areas, the program is designed to help address workforce gaps. Ferris State expects to launch the program within the next few years.
