More Patients Turning to Endodontists to Save Natural Teeth

New data from the American Association of Endodontists show a steady rise in patients seeking specialist care for root canal therapy. With nearly 10% growth in treatments performed by endodontists between 2020 and 2024, more people are prioritizing expertise to preserve their natural teeth.

The latest findings from the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) reveal a clear shift in patient care preferences: more individuals are turning to dental specialists to preserve their natural teeth through advanced endodontic treatment. Based on an analysis of nationwide dental insurance claims from 2020 to 2024, the share of endodontic procedures performed by endodontists has increased by nearly 10%, reflecting both heightened demand for specialized expertise and a growing recognition of the importance of retaining natural dentition.

From 2020 to 2024, the proportion of endodontic treatments carried out by endodontists rose from 34.6% to 44.4%. Patient volume followed a similar trajectory, climbing from 36% to 45%. These numbers highlight a significant trend: general dentists are increasingly referring complex cases to endodontists, who complete additional years of training in root canal therapy and other advanced procedures aimed at saving teeth.

Patients’ attitudes also appear to be driving this shift. A recent nationwide survey commissioned by the AAE found that 94% of adults value keeping their natural teeth for as long as possible. While root canal therapy is sometimes perceived as daunting, the procedure continues to deliver positive outcomes. Nearly half of adults surveyed reported having had a root canal, and among them, 71% expressed satisfaction that they had chosen this treatment over extraction. This aligns with broader trends in medicine in which patients seek out specialty care to ensure better results and long-term health benefits.

The data underscore the collaborative relationship between general practitioners (GPs) and specialists. While GPs remain essential to patients’ overall oral healthcare, endodontists are increasingly relied on for cases involving persistent pain, infection, or the need for advanced techniques. This partnership not only helps patients avoid unnecessary extractions but also minimizes recovery time and supports overall oral function. Click here to read more.
