A new study in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that nearly three out of four adults experience some degree of dental fear, a prevalence higher than previously reported. Researchers at New York University College of Dentistry are developing innovative, accessible treatments.

Dental fear remains a significant barrier to care, with new research showing it is even more widespread than earlier estimates suggested. A national survey of more than 1,000 adults conducted by New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry found that 72.6% reported some level of fear, with nearly half describing it as moderate and more than a quarter classifying it as severe. This high prevalence contributes to a cycle where patients avoid preventive care, only seeking treatment when problems become painful or urgent, further reinforcing their anxiety.

The study highlights an encouraging development: the majority of individuals with moderate to severe fear expressed interest in treatment options, particularly those that could be completed at home. NYU researchers are piloting a program called Dental FearLess, which combines app-based cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness strategies and optional telehealth support. Early results are promising, with about half of participants reporting reduced or eliminated fear after completing the program.

The role of memory also emerged as a critical factor in understanding dental fear. Many patients recall vivid negative experiences from childhood. These findings emphasize the importance of empathetic communication and patient-centered care in preventing new generations from developing similar anxieties. Click here to read more.
