New Consensus Charts Clear Path for Managing Peri-Implant Diseases
Two leading dental organizations have joined forces to deliver evidence-based guidance on preventing and managing peri-implant diseases. The new consensus provides stepwise treatment strategies, risk factor insights, and practical tools to help clinicians protect implant health.
The Academy of Osseointegration (AO) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) have released a consensus report offering evidence-based strategies to prevent and manage peri-implant diseases and conditions. Developed by more than 40 experts, including periodontists, prosthodontists, general dentists, and oral surgeons, the collaborative workshop focused on both prevention and surgical management of peri-implant health challenges.
Participants met in Oak Brook, Illinois, and worked in specialized groups to translate the latest science into clinically applicable guidance. Detailed flow diagrams were created to guide clinicians through treatment pathways. The role of risk assessment and prosthetic considerations were emphasized, noting how implant positioning, soft tissue phenotype, and prosthetic design affect long-term outcomes. Obesity also emerged as a potential risk indicator. Click here to read more.
