
FDA Targets Fluoride Supplements for Kids

In a controversial move, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it will begin phasing out prescription fluoride supplements for children, such as drops and tablets, citing concerns over systemic exposure. The agency claims ingested fluoride may harm the gut microbiome, disrupt thyroid function, lead to weight gain, and possibly lower IQ in children. While the FDA says its evaluation will conclude by October 31, the move is already drawing fierce criticism from dental professionals.
The American Dental Association continues to endorse fluoride for caries prevention, while FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, emphasized the importance of daily oral hygiene and reducing consumption of fermentable carbohydrates. Critics, including Health Secretary Robert F.
