ADA and Penn Launch Living Guidelines to Support Evidence-Based Dental Care
The initiative hopes to keep dental professionals continually informed with real-time, evidence-based clinical guidelines. This living guideline model ensures faster integration of new research into clinical practice, advancing oral and overall health worldwide.
Dentists will soon benefit from more dynamic, evidence-informed clinical recommendations thanks to the new American Dental Association (ADA) Living Guideline Program. Developed in partnership with the Center for Integrative Global Oral Health at Penn Dental Medicine, this is the first known living guideline program dedicated solely to oral health. Unlike traditional guidelines that are updated every few years, living guidelines are continuously revised as new research emerges, enabling dentists and healthcare providers to deliver care that reflects the most current science.
The program’s initial focus will update the 2017 guideline on evaluating potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma. The first recommendation is expected later this year in The Journal of the American Dental. An advisory panel composed of experts from the ADA and other dental organizations will oversee topic selection and prioritization.
By leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced data tools, the program rapidly integrates new biomedical findings, helping dentists make better-informed decisions and improving patient outcomes.
