2024 Brought Expanded Roles and Enhanced Mobility for Oral Health Professionals
In 2024, significant legislative changes across the United States have broadened the scope of practice for oral health professionals. These reforms aim to address workforce shortages and improve access to care by expanding practice authorities and facilitating interstate licensure.
In response to ongoing dental workforce shortages and the need for improved access to oral healthcare, numerous states enacted legislation in 2024 that expands the scope of practice for dental professionals. These changes are designed to enhance the efficiency of dental teams and ensure that underserved populations receive necessary care.
One of the most notable developments is the establishment of the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact, now enacted by 12 states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Kansas, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. This compact allows licensed dentists and dental hygienists to practice across member states without the need for additional licensure, thereby increasing workforce mobility and addressing regional shortages.
Additionally, states have expanded the practice authority of dental hygienists and assistants. For example, Hawaii and South Dakota now permit licensed dental hygienists to perform preventive dental sealant services under supervision. Furthermore, the American Legislative Exchange Council adopted the American Dental Association-crafted Dental Access Model Act, which includes provisions for expanded function dental auxiliaries and oral preventive assistants.
