Leaders in Evidence-Based Dentistry Honored

The American Dental Association Science and Research Institute (ADASRI) and American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research honor the winners of the annual Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD) Faculty and Practice Awards. Supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Colgate, the awards are presented to educators and clinicians who have made significant contributions to implement and advance EBD.

Margherita Fontana, DDS, PhD
Margherita Fontana, DDS, PhD

Margherita Fontana, DDS, PhD, received the 2021 EBD Accomplished Faculty Award. As the Clifford Nelson Endowed Professor of Dentistry in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Fontana directs the school’s cariology courses, in which she emphasizes the use of evidence in active student learning activities that focus on critical thinking and problem solving. Fontana has authored or coauthored numerous evidence-based research manuscripts, including the 2016 American Dental Association (ADA) clinical practice guideline on the use of pit-and-fissure sealants, and the 2018 clinical practice guideline on nonrestorative caries management. She chairs the expert panel responsible for the upcoming ADASRI clinical practice guideline on caries prevention, and sits on the expert panel developing the upcoming ADASRI clinical practice guideline on restorative caries treatments.

Marcelle Nascimento, DDS, PhD
Marcelle Nascimento, DDS, PhD

Marcelle Nascimento, DDS, PhD, was honored with the EBD Mid-Career Faculty Award. An associate professor of restorative dental sciences and director of the Dental Clinic Research Unit at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Nascimento empowers students to integrate evidence into clinical practice and decision-making so they become critical thinkers. As a researcher, Nascimento coauthored the 2018 ADA clinical practice guideline on nonrestorative caries treatments, and is a coauthor of the upcoming ADASRI clinical practice guidelines on caries prevention and restorative caries treatments.

Brian Nový, DDS
Brian Nový, DDS

Brian Nový, DDS, received the 2021 EBD Practice Award. Chief dental officer and a practitioner at the Alliance Dental Center, Massachusetts Public Employees Fund in Quincy, Nový conducts salivary assessments of each of his patients to inform treatment and patient education. In addition to full-time practice, he holds faculty appointments at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine. Outside the clinic, Nový helped coauthor the 2018 ADA clinical practice guideline on nonrestorative caries treatments.
