The global pandemic has resulted in a team of researchers at the University of Kentucky’s College of Dentistry finding creative ways to continue an outreach and care program focused on raising public awareness of the symptoms of oral cancers, and connect patients who need additional care to specialists in Lexington.

Two years into a 3-year project, the program —  funded by a $1 million grant from the United Health Foundation — aims to fight the high prevalence of oral cancer in four counties in Eastern Kentucky.

Prior to COVID-19, the team provided more than 1,000 free oral cancer screenings in three counties. Currently, the team is delivering an awareness campaign to educate people about the causes of oral cancer, how to prevent it, and how to conduct a self-exam. The presentations are being held at local businesses, farmer’s markets, and at local universities for dental hygiene, nursing, and medical students.
