Nitrous Oxide Shortage Expected to Continue Through Year’s End

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and American Dental Association have both warned oral health professionals about the continued shortage of nitrous oxide that was initially projected to end in March 2017.
The FDA released the shortage notice in January following an August 2016 explosion at an Airgas manufacturing facility in Florida that is a major source of clinical nitrous oxide used in dental offices. On it website, the FDA reports that “a return to full capacity throughout the Airgas supply chain is anticipated by the end of 3Q 2017,” meaning that access to the sedative agent is likely to remain limited well into fall.
