Using buffered articaine offers several clinical advantages in dental pain management.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the properties and pharmacokinetics that make articaine a viable local anesthetic in dental settings.
  2. Explain the concept and benefits of using buffered local anesthetics — and buffered articaine, in particular.
  3. Describe clinical modalities and best practices when using buffered anesthetic agents.

Arthur C. DiMarco, DMD, is director and an affiliate assistant professor in the Regional Initiatives in Dental Education program at the University of Washington School of Dentistry in Spokane. He is also a professor of dental hygiene at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. DiMarco is a coauthor of the textbook Local Anesthesia for Dental Professionals.
