This overview of Down syndrome, or trisomy 21, will assist oral health professionals when caring for this patient population.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify the incidence and common clinical characteristics of Down syndrome (DS) or trisomy 21.
  2. Describe oral health considerations and treatment approaches applicable to this patient population.
  3. Discuss considerations for comorbidities in patients with DS, and the importance of a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to care.
