A plant-based whole food diet resulted in reduced gingivitis in a recent randomized trial, according to the study, “The Influence of An Anti‐Inflammatory Diet on Gingivitis. A Randomized Controlled Trial, published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

Of the 30 patients with gingivitis who were randomized into an experimental and a control group, those in the group who changed to a plant-based diet experienced a significant reduction in gingival bleeding.

The experimental group switched to a diet low in processed carbohydrates and rich in plant nitrates and fibers for 4 weeks. The control group did not change their diets. All participants stopped flossing.
