The Forsyth Institute and Photomedics Debut Intraoral Antibacterial Light Device

Photomedics, an oral health technology company based out of the Forsyth Institute in Boston, has developed the Photomedics BlueLight. This intraoral device is described as using light of an appropriate wavelength and intensity to target and kill only harmful, disease-causing bacteria, which allows helpful bacteria to thrive and rebalance the oral microbiome. The firm asserts the device reduces oral pathogens that can cause periodontal disease and oral malodor, among other conditions.

Activated by an intuitive bite switch, the BlueLight’s recommended use is twice per day for two minutes. Nikos Soukos, DDS, PhD, founder and CEO of Photomedics, and J. Max Goodson, DDS, PhD, founder and chief scientific officer, discovered the killing effects of blue light on certain potentially pathogenic oral bacteria in 2002, leading to the development of intraoral blue light technology as an adjunct to routine oral hygiene. “We are proud that our collaborative research environment fosters products such as the Photomedics BlueLight, which we believe could revolutionize the way patients approach their oral health habits,” says Wenyuan Shi, PhD, Forsyth CEO and chief scientific officer.
