While periodontal debridement remains a key tool in nonsurgical periodontal therapy, undesirable outcomes could arise due to various factors, including insufficient debridement or a patient’s failure to practice good oral hygiene. Authored by Keerthana Satheesh, DDS, MS, “Key Tenets of Periodontal Debridement,”  explores the fundamentals of scaling and root planing, as well as the importance of an effective maintenance recall protocol. This continuing edu – cation article — developed with the support of an unrestricted educational grant from Colgate-Palmolive and in collaboration with the American Academy of Periodontology — also discusses adjunctive approaches and newer clinical tools that may help improve outcomes following nonsurgical periodontal treatment.
