New Guidelines Released on the Use of Systemic Antibiotics in Endodontics

In a newly released position statement, “AAE Guidance on the Use of Systemic Antibiotics in Endodontics,” the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) provides dentists and endodontists guidance on how to do their part to halt the spread of antibiotic resistance. The document presents clinical recommendations, available evidence related to prescribing antibiotics after endodontic procedures, and lists gaps in knowledge for which personal judgment is the best guide for assessing risk and benefits, according to the AAE.
One recommendation is to inform patients about the signs and symptoms of an infection, and provide them with a “stand-by” antibiotics prescription to be filled only if infection occurs. The patient would also be advised to call the provider’s office. Additional guidance is provided on indications for performing culture and sensitivity tests, and prophylactic use of antibiotics for endodontic surgery. The document also compares the efficacy of various types, dosages and duration of amoxicillin and penicillin VK.
