Evaluating Potentially Malignant Oral Disorders
The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs has issued an “Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation of Potentially Malignant Disorders in the Oral Cavity.”
The American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs has issued an “Evidence- Based Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation of Potentially Malignant Disorders in the Oral Cavity” to inform clinicians about the management of suspicious lesions. It also discusses the use of adjuncts as triage tools for evaluation. The recommendations represent a major revision to the ADA’s 2010 guideline, “Evidence-Based Clinical Recommendations Regarding Screening for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas.” Among the recommendations are that providers obtain an updated medical, social and dental history, and perform intraoral and extraoral conventional visual and tactile examinations of all adult patients. For individuals with suspicious lesions, clinicians should perform a biopsy of the lesion or immediately refer the patient to a specialist.
