Digital Dentistry Curriculum Debuts

Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine in Stony Brook, New York, has been selected as one of five U.S. dental schools to pilot a new digital dentistry curriculum. The program will be incorporated into the 2017–2018 fall and spring academic year, with full implementation scheduled to begin with the class of 2021. Developed by the American College of Prosthodontists, the curriculum is designed to comprehensively train new dentists in how to utilize digital tools in clinical practice.

Postdoctoral residents in prosthodontics, general practice, orthodontics and periodontics will undergo advanced training in digital dentistry. The curriculum covers the use of intraoral scanners, computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing, laboratory scanners, cone beam computed tomography, and caries detection devices, according to the school.
