The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Henry Schein Cares Foundation have awarded four oral and maxillofacial surgeons $2500 in grant funding to help support their volunteerism in the Global Outreach Program. Each grant recipient also receives $2000 in health care products, courtesy of Henry Schein Cares. The winners are:
- Joli Chou, DMD, MD, FACS, of Philadelphia, who will lead a two-week surgical mission with Africa Mercy to Guinea. Along with other health care providers, Chou will conduct approximately 60 major oral and maxillofacial surgeries during the mission.
- Clay Van Leeuwen, DMD, MD, of Fairbanks, Alaska, with Global Medical and Surgical Teams, will return to a clinic in Kyotera, Uganda, for follow-up on patients who had cleft lip and palate surgeries. Leeuwen will also perform additional primary lip and palate repairs.
- Gary R. Parker, DDS, of Lindale, Texas, and his team plan to treat about 250 patients in Conakry, Guinea, and Parker. He also expects to participate in a full-time surgical mentoring program for surgeons.
- Edward Zebovitz, DDS, of Bowie, Maryland, will perform prosthetic reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint, facial reconstruction, tumor management and cleft lip and palate reconstruction during a Surgeons for Smiles’ trip to Eritrea, Africa.
